Bob leads the way

The weather has hampered the start of this years spring angling festival with the first day cancelled due to high winds so Sunday became the start day by default the weather was fine so I decided to give the lads on board the best possible chance of winning the first day by running off to the distant wrecks I knew were fishing well recently also the sea conditions were not in my opinion ideal for inshore work so off we set with a team of dedicated anglers who have all fished off the sea urchin II before so knew the score and settled down for a long steam with plenty of coffee on tap the sun shining and a good crack full of anticipation the run out seemed to pass really quickly

We arrived to find the water full of algae and tiny bits no fish marking and none biting triple drat!  Never mind I knew the fish were around here some ware and it can be like looking for a needle in a haystack but what we did have on our side was plenty of time and two tides and a slack to fish on my hopes were high after many drifts we did catch the odd cod lost the odd one and missed a good few bites but nothing in the order of previous visits

eventually after an hour or so I found some massive feed marks way off the wreck and not in the usual place at all so working around the feed we managed some more fish that’s when I convinced myself the fish were plenty full and there or there about’s but following the feed marks was near impossible as they were constantly on the move and never in the place we had just left

Then the tide changed the water clarity changed the wind dropped and bingo everything came back to near the wreck and four an hour the fishing was brilliant which gave the lads there chance to do there stuff and get the fish out of the wreck and into the boat which they all did most of the time

Putting the hours in on one venue gives you so much information on fish and there feeding habits as the conditions change just turning up dropping down and deciding there is no fish there and moving on can be a bad move and I must admit done this many times in the past some marks are burnt out and only deserve a couple of drops some are worth the wait and its only by spending the time out there you would ever know the difference

Monday was day 2 and the conditions were completely differant with high winds forecast for late afternoon so offshore wrecking was out of the question

we did try a few inshore wrecks first thing which produced a few fish but by 11am we were at anchor under the cliffs and not many bites after a few moves we found the days winner on the rock a nice cod of 7.5oz but a poor day by comparison but thats fishing as they say

Anyway well done to my anglers for having faith and getting the fish into the boat and sweeping the board on the first day and taking two place on the second day of the spring festival 2011

Brian and his huge pollacks

Had Brian Cope on and his partner Sunday along with 9 lads from sheffield the weather was perfect for a run off to the distant wrecks and the long journey proved worth while plenty of cod but the best sport was with the pollack which are showing more and more this time of the year here in Whitby Brian managed a cracking fish of just over 15lbs along with a few more well over 10lb the 15 lber  is a new pollack record for sea urchin II over the last few years they seem to be getting bigger our previous best was 13lb last year lets hope this is the future because the sport they offer is fantastic

Father and sons fishing day

Once again I have decided to dedicate a day to the youngsters and this years date will be Sunday 28th August we will depart at 8am and return by 1pm in the past 5 hours is more than enough for there first time

the cost will be £25 each with  all the tackle included same price even if you use your own you can book your places by email or the phone  once you have made contact with me you can send me your deposit of £10 each

please note all children must be accompanied by a adult guardian and please have a read of the recent itinerary page I have added to the web site it will get you off to great start

we will be fishing the same deep water grounds we do on the full day trips so there is every chance you or your children will catch more than just the usual summer mackerel we will be having a go with shads as well as the bait and hokiasrigs  and you will not be squashed 10 places maximum and two crew on hand last year was great with plenty of cod and ling caught by everyone I think this is without doubt a fantastic experience for all and although not as lucrative this is my way giving something back to fishing and re living my youth fishing with my dad and in turn me with my son its not always about money a days boat fishing with your youngsters is priceless  we will do our best to make the day a special one for you and the family

Sea urchin needs your input

As a skipper who likes to go the extra mile in order to make your day as enjoyable as possible I am always looking for new and innovative ideas to make your day that little bit better constantly adding little ideas of my own such as the recent fitting of some seating, the tea and coffee boiler was one of my better ideas I am sure you will agree, along with the fish box rack and bait station, and all will agree the addition of Mac the crewman has improved the service no end

So what would improve your day apart from the obvious things we all want such as….

catching more and bigger fish?

I honestly don’t know any skipper who would not want you to catch more fish, it’s good for business and apart from your safety finding you fish is my main concern believe me,

charge less?

If I could I would it’s just impossible right now try think about everything that’s rising in price fuel, maintenance, harbour dues, licence dues, boat and public insurance, the only thing not rising in cost is a days fishing on the sea urchin   frozen yet again at £45

What I can improve is the little changes that make it more of a pleasure than a pain and I would like to get your feed back on what you think you would change if you were the skipper? could you make things more comfortable? easier to book? offer bait collection? start earlier/later? anything please help me to help you by leaving your ideas along with your name no matter how obvious it may be to you it may not be to me.

I will take them all on board and to the person who in my opinion has the best idea or most practical/simple idea I will post  a free sea urchin crew Tshirt (see below) to your address this offer is also running on the whitbyseaanglers fishing forum site

offer ends 5pm next Sunday 20/02/2011

2010 finale

my last report for 2010 on our wrecking trip the last Wednesday and Thursday in December.

The weather was looking good for the last few days of the year and as we steamed out of Whitby the fresh river water was evident like a brown cloud pouring out of the extensions and a mile or so north  the water was reasonably clear around 5 miles into our journey I decided to try a few favorites 8 and 10 mile to the east of Whitby.

This tuned out to be a bad choice, the first wreck produced nothing and I should have changed my plan. Looking back now it’s easy to say that.

Still I pressed on further east to another favorite which can often produce some good pollock after plenty of drifts and only one pollock (albeit a cracker) we had to admit defeat and made the long journey back north west to the 9 mile ground and this was absolute rubbish as well.

There are a couple of wrecks in that vicinity but my good Friend sea otter2 was sat on the best one most of the day and after a call on the radio I realised any fish that were in the area were probably on that one wreck.

I tried all the others with just the odd ling and the usual poutings we covered lots of miles that day for nothing and I really felt for the lads at the end of the day as the other two boats had done really well we discovered when we got back.

a good pollock on the first day

So I decided the next day I would push off to the distant wrecks around 20 miles from Whitby. With only two anglers showing interest  (woody and Garry Arkle) two did ring late on Wednesday but never showed what a mistake they made read on.

Woody invited his dad to join us so now there were four including me and as I don’t often get a chance to fish  I decided to take the chance and have a days sport myself.

We set off early to gain a bit of help from the tide and we made good time full of anticipation I headed to the first wreck and hoped we could re produce that marvelous day in the Autumn when we badged up on the first wreck.

Just before we arrived around a mile away I heard another boat behind us I knew this was Paul Eddon’s boat (trot-on) as we spoke the night before and discussed our plans as we often do, he got to the wreck first by one drift as I set the boat up he called me on the radio and said all the rods were in.

Brilliant stuff I said, our first drift all four of us were into cod as well and this went on drift after drift we caught every time.

The only time we missed was the odd time we got stuck in the wreck most of the cod were caught on squid around 4lb to 6lb with a good sprinkling of 8lb to 10lbers. I think the best one went 12lb.

What a cracking day and by the time I decided to headed back I was totally knackered we hadn’t stopped for three hours solid no time for tea or food when the fishing is that good!

I put the auto pilot on and just sat back for 15mins before contemplating all that filleting enough fish for the family now until spring lets hope 2011 brings more tight lines all the best from the crew have a good one and we look forward to seeing you during the year
